This is my favorite book from this series. I love Mike and Dusty and Finn and Reese. There is so much going on in this book and so many different stories, I couldn't put this book down. If I had to pick my favorite female character from this series it would have to be Dusty, she is strong and carefree and looks out for the ones she loves.
Mike Haines grew up in the Burg, he became a detective
in the Burg and he is now raising his children in the Burg. It's a place where everyone knows each other and they look out for each other, so when Mike's friend and neighbor drops dead from a heart attack the whole town shows for his funeral. The whole family comes together including Mikes high school sweet heart Debbie. She informs Mike that her baby sister, Dusty didn't even bother to show up to their brother's funeral and hasn't come around. Mike is furious, he knows that Dusty went wild and moved away, but he still remembers the sweet and loving girl she use to be, the one he had such a special bond with. He decides to confront Dusty, because her brother loved her and she should have at least shown up to his funeral. Standing at Dusty's door he realizes how wrong he was, Dusty isn't the wild teenager anymore and within minutes of being around her again their special bond is restored.
Debbie is not happy about the relationship between Mike and Dusty, as always she thinks the worst of Dusty and does anything she can to bring her down. Mike has trust issues to work on, seeing as his ex-wife lied to him constantly and Dusty has her own secrets from the past so it's an uphill battle from the start for them. As if that isn't enough, Debbie turns on the whole family and Dusty is forced to move in with her dead brother's wife to help raise their two teenage sons because the sister-in-law has checked out. There is also the story of Mike's daughter Reese and Dusty's nephew Finn (Squee, I love them). I won't give you any details about their relationship because I don't want to give anything away, I'm just promising that you will love this book!!
