A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest

Synopsis
On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.
A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

Review
I am a vampire geek! I swear, I love all kinds of vampires...sweet vampires, mean vampires, goth vampires, hot vampires....you get the picture. A Shade of Vampire just added to that list. I loved this book! I was so engaged in the story. I read all afternoon, not wanting to stop. I can't find a release day for book 2 anywhere and I need it now!!!

I love vampire love stories, but I also like vampire stories that are kind of a love story but not really. That's what this book was to me. I can see it developing into a major love story, but for book 1, there wasn't enormous amount of romance, just a little. I liked that. It allowed me to get to know the characters and what this vampire tale (because you know all vampire books are different, lol) is like and bond with the book. If I don't bond, it's over for me, so bonding with a book and the characters is a must!

Sofia's main goal in life is to survive without going insane like her mother. He next goal is to keep the relationship she has with her best friend normal....but that is impossible when she has developed feelings for him when he clearly doesn't return the feelings.

One of her problems is solved when she is kidnapped and taken to The Shade. She no longer has to worry about her feelings for Ben. Now she has to worry about going crazy like her mother. Has this really happened? Has she been kidnapped? Or is the crazy finally setting in for good?

Lucky for us, this isn't her crazy, lol. She really has been kidnapped by vampires and taken to The Shade. We would have had a very short story had she only gone crazy.

So, Sofia wakes in The Shade to find out that she is to be a slave to the prince, Derek. His brother Lucas brought her to The Shade. After meeting the prince, Sofia has no choice but to get to know him. She finds herself actually liking him, he isn't as bad as the rest of the vampires seem to be. Derek is also drawn to her for more reasons than her blood:

She showed me a humanity I longed to return to.

Sofia is forced to stay against her will, all she knows is there must be a way out.

Where there's a way in, there simply must be a way out.

After her failed attempt to escape she truly learns that Derek is not as bad as he should be. She feels safe with him.

Ultimately, it was Derek who made life at The Shade worth living.

Then she starts to develop more feelings for him. Probably more than she should....but she can't help it! He is just so safe, and so sweet and everyone else (including the horrid Lucas) is just so horrible!

"From the moment I got here, all I've wanted to do was escape and go back home, but Derek..." she leant toward me and placed a gentle kiss over my cheek "...you've begun to feel like home."

Ah! I just loved this story. Everything about it was enticing to me. It is YA, the heroine is only 17, but it is still so good! With the situation the characters are put in at the end, I can only imagine where book 2 will go. I just can't wait!

Excerpt
I’d been meandering along the shore for about an hour when I suddenly sensed that I wasn’t alone. Someone was approaching me from behind. My heart leapt. I was so sure it was Ben, that when a stranger showed up beside me, I couldn’t hide my disappointment.
He must have noticed, because a smirk formed on his lips. “Were you expecting someone else, love?”
I eyed him suspiciously, remembering how many times my father had told me not to talk to strangers. I looked him over, taking in his appearance. My eyes widened. I couldn’t find words to describe how fine a man he was. He was almost beautiful. The first thing I took notice of was how his blue eyes were about three shades brighter than any I’d ever seen before. It was such a stark contrast to his pale – almost white – skin and dark hair. Standing beside me, he was easily more than half a foot taller. His height, broad shoulders and lean build reminded me of Ben, but he had a presence that was far more imposing than my best friend’s.
My gaze settled on his face.
I realized that he was inspecting me just as closely as I was him. His eyes on me suddenly made me feel uncomfortably vulnerable. I gave my father’s advice a second thought, but quickly canceled out all notions of heeding to his counsel when I reminded myself that he stopped caring a long time ago.
I straightened to my full height and mustered all the courage I had to keep myself from running away from this stranger.
Big mistake.
The confident smirk didn’t leave his face for even a moment.
“Like what you see?”
“A bit full of yourself, aren’t you?” I scoffed, annoyed by his audacity.
He stepped forward, closer to me, and leaned his head toward mine.
“Don’t I have the right to be?”
He knew he looked good and wasn’t about to act like he didn’t.
“Whatever,” was my oh-so-brilliant comeback.
My shoulders sagged with defeat as I took a step back, unsettled by how close he was now. I rolled my eyes and did a one-eighty, not quite in the mood to play whatever game this stranger was proposing.
I would soon realize that I was about to play his game whether I liked it or not.
He grabbed my arm and turned my body to face him. This motion alone made every single internal alarm I had within me go off in a frenzy.
This man was danger and I knew it. I tried to wriggle away from his touch, but I was no match for his strength.
“Tell me your name,” he commanded.
I was about to refuse, but was horrified to find myself blurting out my name in response.
“Sofia Claremont.”
As soon as I revealed my name, his eyes lit up with a kind of sinister approval. Then he reached for my face and traced his thumb over my jaw line.
“Hello, Sofia Claremont. You’re one stupid girl for taking a walk alone at this time of night. You never know what kind of evil a pretty little thing like you could happen to come by.”
I found myself wondering exactly what kind of evil he was. But I was suddenly overcome by the sensations that were surrounding me. My senses took in everything at once. I heard the waves, felt the sand, smelled the ocean salt, tasted the flavor of cherry and saw the stranger’s manic appearance as he stuck a needle to my neck. The effect was instant. I was barely able to gasp, much less scream. I went from sensing everything to sensing absolutely nothing.
My last conscious thought was that I may never see Ben again.

Bound by the Vampire: A Paranormal Romance Novella (Blood and Absinthe, Book 2) by Chloe Hart

So, you know how fast our boys in Black Dagger Brotherhood and The Rock Chick series move? Well, the guys in this series move just as fast! I am loving Chloe Hart right now, I have read 2 of her novella’s today! I am ready to move on to the 3rd!
Remember Celia from the 1st book? Well Bound by the Vampire is her story. Someone is trying to kill her. What do you do when someone is trying to kill you? You go to a kick ass vampire and ask for his help!
Celia
Celia decides that she is going to ask Jack’s (from book 1) friend Evan for help. She doesn’t know him, but Jack is in Canada with Liz and Celia doesn’t have time to wait for them to come home. Someone has already tried to shoot her with a poisoned arrow.  She shows up at Evan’s office and is a bit intimidated being in what seems like a club that is made for sex. She can’t seem to get her story together and quickly bores Evan
“I’m not… I mean…I’m only 1/8 blood Fae. I’m more human than Faery.” He shrugged impatiently. “Look, sweetheart---I don’t really give a shit what you are. You’ve got about 5 seconds to tell me why you’re here. After that I’m going to get a lot less polite.”  (Uhggg!! What a jerk!)
Evan
We can already tell that Evan is going to turn out to be a jerk, but aren’t those our favorite book guys! The jerks that we know will end up being sweet and demanding all at the same time…Stop being a jerk Evan! Celia needs your protection and she is willing to pay for it, but what do you do instead of help her?
“I doubt you can afford me sweetheart.”
He sat back in his chair. “Anything on the table besides money?”
You insult her by asking to drink her blood instead! JERK!
Feeling that Evan has made a big joke out of her, Celia leaves. As she is leaving he stops her… (Can it be? Is she getting the best of him with her innocent ways?)….he stops her only to give her useless advice of backing down from her research (this is why someone wants to kill her).
As she leaves he realizes he can’t keep himself from going after her. What is wrong with him? Evan Grant cares for himself only. Even through his self absorbed tendencies he decides to follow her, and lucky he did because the hit man sent to kill her is following too.
I'm gonna skip all the fighting details--one of my favorite lines of the book come after the fight
The worst thing about the numbness in his body was that he couldn't feel her against him (awww!!!!).
I hope I have given you enough to make you get this book. It is wonderfully bargained priced at only .99 and it is a killer read! You have to read on to find out what Evan and Celia go through together. There is so much more to the story than just him saving her from a crazy hit man. YOU HAVE TO READ IT NOW J

Taming the Vampire: A Paranormal Romance Novella (Blood and Absinthe, Book 1) by Chloe Hart

Taming the Vampire was an AWESOME, short, fast read! I read it in about 45 minutes. I can’t wait to start book 2 of this series.
Liz is a member of the Green Fae clan. She is only about 1/16 fae, her bloodline is diluted by humans. She feels that she has a disadvantage among the other fae of her clan. Not only is she part fae, but she is also a warrior demon hunter.
Jack Morgan is one of the local vampires. Liz can’t stand him, she pretty much hates all vampires (so of course she is secretly in love with him, lol).
Liz
If Jack ever found out she was attracted to him, her life wouldn’t be worth living

So, as a warrior it is Liz’s duty to protect. Being as she doesn’t have much fae in her she has to train extra hard, take herbal supplements and has recently found out from her best friend Celia another way she can vamp (hehe) up her strength.
“Have you lost your mind?” Celia was grinning at her. “I’m telling you, it’s all right here. A sure-fire way to increase your power for one night. All you have to do is”---  “Don’t say it!” “---sleep with a vampire.” Liz glared at her. “You’re joking.”
So much for her hatred for Jack….. “ I’ll never be desperate enough to beg Jack Morgan to sleep with me. Not even to save the world. Especially since he’d just turn me down, which would be very, very bad for my ego.”

Jack

While Liz contemplates how she will make this proposition to Jack he is thinking to himself what a vampire-hating bitch she is, hehehe.
While Liz is out trying to fight the newest creature in the city she is wounded. Since she was already on her way to talk to Jack she decides that she will ask him for help in dressing her wound.
“Only you would be stupid enough to come to a vampire with an open wound”……
“There is something I’ve got to talk to you about when we’re finished with this”
O0o0o0, sooooo how embarrassing would it be to ask someone for sex that you hate, and you know they hate you just as much!?
Liz painfully explains to Jack about the “ritual” She lets him know it consists of chants and herbs…..(can she say it!)
“And then…” her fingernails bit into her pals as she wlled herself to continue. She felt like she was choking. “…if we have sex…” Okay, it was out, no taking it back now.
So, how does Jack take the proposition to have sex with someone he hates (yet secretly also likes…) You better get to reading. This book is currently free so you have no excuse not to get it! I’m telling you I loved it and I’m off to read the 2nd book now J

Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward

Book #3 of the best vampire series of all time!

Of everyone I know that has read this series, this is their favorite book. There must be something wrong with me because it was NOT my favorite lol. It's actually more like number 4 or 5 for me. But, none the less, still an awesome book. This series is just so intense, it's hard for them all to be number 1, lol.

Lover Awakened is the story of Zsadist. He thinks of himself as damaged and everyone that comes in contact with him fears him. With his pitch black eyes, his towering, skeletal physique, his shaved skull, piercings, tattoos, and nasty jagged scar running down the middle of his face. Full of hate, anger, and emotional disconnect. Needless to say, he is terrifying!

He is too "clean" for me to be Zsadist, but the scar and tattoos are pretty much dead on

Ruben Cortada IS my Zsadist

Our heroine, Bella a beautiful aristocrat vampire only has eyes for Z and has since book 2. She doesn't understand why she can't leave him alone, I mean he's such an asshole to her, she just can't help herself.

Olivia Wilde is my Bella

In this book, Bella is kidnapped and Z goes crazy (Ahh, the things these guys will do for their mates). His only mission is to find Bella and save her. Z is by far, no a lovey dovey person. He goes through extreme measures to find Bella and protect her from everyone, even the Brothers.

If you are in the mood for a love triangle, then for sure, you MUST HURRY and read this book!!! Bella wants no one but Z (still she doesn't understand why, lol). He is put off by his hideous past and thinks he is not good enough to be loved by Bella. Phurry (Z's twin) is also in love with Bella. Z wants Bella to be with Phury. Why go through all of the saving and protecting just to get rid of her....see what I mean...crazy love triangle.

I can't tell you who she picks, just know, this one is full of surprises and much turmoil. So get to it! Read it!!

Lover Eternal by J.R. Ward

Book #2 of the best vampire series of all time!

Lover Eternal is my 2nd favorite book of the series. This book focuses on the brother Rhage (oh, I just love him so much!!) He is one of the younger brothers and is called "Hollywood" because of his model/actor looks. He is a playboy and always looking for women. Rhage is never satisfied by just one woman. On the outside he seems like a whore, but on the inside he just wants to find someone to love him for him.

Rhage literally has to fight the "monster" inside of himself. When he reaches his boiling point the "monster" is forced out of him. No one in his path is safe.

Mary is introduced to us when she comes to to the Brother’s compound (she has no idea where she is, but has travelled with friends Bella and John Matthew that have some questions for the brothers). She is the girl next door, and 100% human (and suffering from a deadly illness) Rhage is drawn to her. For days he pursues her aggressively, and although she is highly attracted to him her illness and insecurities keep holding her back.

I loved Rhage for a long time after reading this book, he was not one to easily get over for me, that is until I got to Vishous (He is my #1 Brother). The series just gets better and better with each book. I was hooked from the 1st book and was pulled further into the series as I read each book.

I am feeling both of these guys are Rhage

Dark Lover by J.R. Ward

Book #1 of the best vampire series of all time!

Dark Lover introduces us to the vampire world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. We learn of the transitioning process to becoming a vampire (not your typical vampire transition, you pretty much have to be born into the vampire world), we learn a little about each of the "brothers" and their job to protect the human race.

In Dark Lover we learn the story of Wrath (the Blind King) and Beth (my favorite female from the entire series...a journalist, who is the daughter to one of the brothers that has recently been murdered).  Wrath has promised to protect Beth and help her through the transition she will recently have that she has no idea about. Beth's cop friend Butch, has also taken to protecting Beth on his own will (probably because he is in love with her! I mean she is drop dead gorgeous and sweet, so who wouldn't be?)

Not sure who this is, but she is my Beth. He is not my Wrath, he is too clean lol

Peter Steele is my Wrath

By protecting Beth, Butch is slowly pulled into the vampire world with Beth. Both, unaware of exactly what is happening. Beth, because she is still having trouble believing vampires are real, and Butch because he has no idea what is going on.

The vampires of this series are not your typical vampires. The are not exactly immortal, they can die...they just live a really long time. They also eat human food and only drink of other vampires. The feel, the love and they bond (I mean REALLY BOND!) After book 1 you should be hooked! If you're not, I think you need you head examined ;)

For longest time Wrath was my favorite brother, but I found out quickly the more you read of this series, the harder it is to decide who is the best brother.
